BEGINNING TAPESTRY–SEMI-PRIVATE INSTRUCTION      

Beginning Tapestry-Workshop Sampler

INSTRUCTOR:  KIKI DEMBROW

June 18-20, 2021  Friday-Sunday  9:30am-3:30pm

DETAILS: Learn the basics of tapestry weaving in this small group 3-day workshop. Learn how to warp the loom, then weave stripes, geometric shapes like triangles and rectangles, create smooth curves, and add colors. Students should expect to complete at least one sampler; some will start a second. The 12”x18” copper pipe loom and a full-color reference handout are yours to take home.

Prerequisite: None. This workshop is intended for beginners.

Class Size:  Minimum 2     Maximum 4

Cost: $270. Includes a 12”x18” copper loom, one warp, full-color reference handout, and use of tools. Weft is purchased separately from our school shoppe (about $5).

WEAVE AROUND A BOX

Woven around a Box

INSTRUCTOR : TERRY OLSON

     June 25-27, 2021  Friday-Sunday   9:30am-3:30pm

DETAILS: Start with the supplied box, learn how to prepare it, warp it, weave a tapestry around it, finish it and remove the box.  These techniques can be applied to make bags, purses, and trays in many sizes and shapes. Students should be able to finish the box, which is approximately 5” square.

Prerequisite: None.  This class is suitable for all skill levels.

Class size:   Minimum 6      Maximum 12

COST: $150 plus $5. Includes one box, one warp, some weft. More weft can be purchased in the school shoppe.

SPINNING ON A DROP SPINDLE? YES, YOU CAN!

Drop Spindle

INSTRUCTOR: SARI PETERSON

July 10, 2021           Saturday       9:30am-3:30pm

DETAILS: In one 6-hour workshop, learn to use a drop spindle to create custom yarn.  Make yarn soft and fluffy, tightly twisted, thick, thin, or a bit of it all.  Create colors with a beautiful handmade tool that fits in a bag and travels with ease.  Turn fluff into yarn and straw into gold! Sari has top whorl spindles for use and/or purchase.

Prerequisite: None

Class size: Minimum 4 Maximum 8

Cost: $50 plus $25 materials fee. Instructor provides all the fiber and tools for use.

ACID DYEING ON WOOL

Pro Chem Acid Dyes on Wool

INSTRUCTOR: SANDY KENNARD

July 21, 2021   Wednesday   9:30am-4:00pm

DETAILS: Use this one-day workshop to learn about and use Pro Chem Acid dyes on wool. Students will gain an understanding of color formulas, yarn preparation, successful dyeing processes and how to sample and recreate colors. Take home good-sized samples of dyed wool yarn you can use.

Prerequisite: None. Open to new and returning students.

Class size: Minimum 3   Maximum 6

WEDGE WEAVE

Wedge Weave

INSTRUCTOR: TERRY OLSON

 July 23-25, 2021   Friday-Sunday  9:30am-3:30pm

DETAILS: Wedge weave tapestry, woven on the diagonal, creates scalloped edges when released from tension. Learn the basics to create bold colorful patterns.  More advanced techniques include the feather stitch, using slits to create flaps and diamonds,and combining wedge weave with regular tapestry.  Students should expect to take home a sampler of these techniques and a handout.

Prerequisite: Minimal weaving skills will be helpful.

Class size: Minimum 6       Maximum 12

BEGINNING SPINNING

Spinning Wheel

INSTRUCTOR: CHRISTINE THOMAS-FLITCROFT

July 31,August 1, 2021   Saturday-Sunday   9:30am-3:30pm

DETAILS: Students will learn the basics of spinning yarn using a spinning wheel.  Students will create a single and a 2-ply yarn.  Workshop includes spinning wheel maintenance, as well as selecting and preparing wool for spinning using different types of equipment.  Students may borrow a wheel if necessary.

Prerequisite: None. This workshop is intended for beginners.

Class size:  Minimum 4  Maximum 7

Cost: $100 plus $10 materials including all fiber used in workshop.

AUGUST

RAVENSTAIL TWINING

Medicine Bag

INSTRUCTOR: JOHN BEARD

August 6-9, 2021     Friday-Monday      9:30am-3:30pm

DETAILS: Beginners in this 4-day workshop will weave a two-sided, 3-inch square Medicine bag by using 4 or 5 of the basic Ravenstail twining techniques.  Returning students may work on individual projects.

 Prerequisite: None

 Class Size: Minimum 4   Maximum 6

Cost: $200 plus $45 materials fee for thigh spun warp, commercial weft, fur, and string.  Students need to build or acquire a three-foot-wide table top Ravenstail Loom.  Plans are available. Info on ordering a custom-built loom for $125 is available upon registration. Looms take time. Order well in advance.

NAVAJO STYLE WEAVING TECHNIQUES

Navajo Style Techniques

  INSTRUCTOR:  KEVYNNE LAYNE

August 16-20, 2021   Monday-Friday       9:30am-3:30pm

DETAILS:  In this five-day workshop, students will spend one day warping the loom and planning their individual project. Over the remaining 4 days, students will learn Navajo style techniques using traditional tools such as the fork and batten. They will practice diagonal, horizontal, and vertical patterns which are derived from classic Navajo motifs. Motivated students will produce an 8” x 10” weaving.

 Prerequisites: None

 Class size:   Minimum 5  Maximum 8

Cost: $250 + $15 materials fee. Includes one warp, use of loom and tools, detailed handout. Weft will be purchased in school shoppe. Students may buy their looms and tools, optional.

ADVANCED SPINNING SKILLS

INSTRUCTOR: CHRISTINE THOMAS-FLITCROFT

Spinning Wheel

August 28-29, 2021   Saturday-Sunday   9:30am-3:30pm

DETAILS: Students will hone their spinning skills in this two-day workshop.  Practice creating consistent yarns and multiple ply yarns, as well as designing yarns.  Try spinning exotic protein fibers like llama, alpaca, pygora, silk, camel, cashmere and yak, as well as trying plant fibers like cotton, flax, hemp, bamboo and ramie.  Instructor supplies fibers.

Prerequisite: Basic to intermediate level, not a beginner workshop.

Class size:  Minimum 4  Maximum 7

Cost: $100 plus $25 materials including all fiber used in workshop.

ADVANCED DESIGN

Details: A continuation of Design Fundamentals, this class focuses on creating cartoons and using design knowledge for positive critiques. A basic understanding of the design elements, principles and the creative process is required for this class.

DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS

DETAILS:This foundational class covers design elements and principles common to visual design, with an emphasis on weaving design and cartoons. It covers the creative process and design tools. Mostly a presentation of key terms and examples, instruction also offers design exercises and optional critiques to help develop and apply the knowledge.
