OPEN STUDIO- IN PERSON

$200 per 10-week term, come as often as you like.

TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS 10AM-3PM

WEDNESDAYS NOON-5pm*

SATURDAYS 10AM-3PM FIRST 4 WEEKS/MONTH

A time for students who are registered to come to school to weave with others. A Roving Instructor will be present on Tuesdays and Thursdays to assist and answer weaving questions. Open Studio on other days of the week may not have roving instructors.

Open Studio tuition gives access to roving instructors, office hours, library privileges and volunteer opportunities.

To sign up for Open Studio a person needs to have taken an introductory class or be an experienced or returning weaver.  Introductory classes, described below, include Tapestry Techniques , Beginning Tapestry Semi-Private Instruction Workshops, and/or Tapestry Techniques on a Navajo Style Loom (Wednesday evenings).

*Wednesday evening OPEN STUDIO will occur on days the Tapestry Techniques on a Navajo Style Loom class meets.  On those days, Open Studio hours will be Wednesdays, noon-8pm. See Class Schedule below for those dates.

INTENSIVE WORKSHOPS- IN PERSON

Cancellation: If a workshop does not meet minimum registration one week before it begins, it will be canceled.  Register early!

BEGINNING TAPESTRY–SEMI-PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

DETAILS: Learn the basics of tapestry weaving in this small group 3-day workshop. Learn how to warp the loom, then weave stripes, geometric shapes like triangles and rectangles, create smooth curves, and add colors. Students should expect to complete at least one sampler; some will start a second. The 12”x18” copper pipe loom and a full-color reference handout are yours to take home. This workshop is intended for beginners.

MINIMUM: 2  MAXIMUM: 4

COST: $290, includes loom, one warp. Weft purchased at school.

CLASSES- IN PERSON

A class occurs during Open Studio, is small, and has a defined length with a curriculum and goals. Students register and pay a class fee that is separate from the Open Studio tuition.  Classes usually meet weekly.

TAPESTRY TECHNIQUES

INSTRUCTOR: TERRY OLSON

DETAILS: Whether you are a beginning or have more advanced skills, this class will teach you the techniques you need to weave a successful tapestry. Beginners will learn how to warp the loom, then weave stripes, geometric shapes like triangles and rectangles, create smooth curves, and add colors. Advanced techniques like pick and pick, circles, weft bundling taught when students are ready. Class size is small and is held during Open Studio on Tuesdays. A 12” x 18” copper pipe loom is available for use and/or purchase. In addition, the tools, weft and warp you will need are available for purchase in the School Shoppe. All levels welcome.

NOVEMBER 2, 9, 16, 30, DECEMBER 7, 2021

TAPESTRY TECHNIQUES ON A NAVAJO STYLE LOOM

INSTRUCTOR: KEVYNNE LAYNE

DETAILS: In this class, students will weave contemporary designs using Navajo-style techniques and tools.  A Navajo-style warp is four-selvedge; a Navajo-style loom is an upright wooden frame loom. Use of tools and a loom are included in the fee and are available for purchase. Warp and weft will be purchased at the school shoppe. Suitable for beginning and advanced weavers.

New weavers need to take one of these three introductory classes/workshops before they can register for Open Studio. Experienced weavers do not need to have taken these foundation classes.

INTRODUCTION TO RAISED OUTLINE PICK AND PICK

INSTRUCTOR: KIKI DEMBROW

DETAILS: Learn how to use pick and pick to weave vertical and diagonal raised outlines for geometric and non geometric designs.  Pick and pick and raised outlines can also be used for creating interesting color patterns and gradations.  Class discussion includes color choices, design options and tips for planning a cartoon.  Students will weave a sampler that can serve as a guide for the techniques.  This class is not suitable for beginning weavers.

ONE-DAY RAISED OUTLINE REFRESHER

INSTRUCTOR: KIKI DEMBROW

DETAILS: For weavers who have taken Introduction to Raised Outline and have questions or areas they want to review and discuss such as design or color choices, The class content will be tailored to meet the specific needs and requests of the group.

DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS

INSTRUCTOR: AMY BELGAN

DETAILS: This foundational class covers design elements and principles common to visual design, with an emphasis on weaving design and cartoons. It covers the creative process and design tools. Mostly a presentation of key terms and examples, instruction also offers design exercises and optional critiques to help develop and apply the knowledge.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Independent Study is  one-on-one instruction, online or in person. A contract details the focus;  instruction days and times will be determined by the student and instructor.
