OPEN STUDIO–IN PERSON

$200 per 10-week term, come as often as you like.

(Option B: $100 for 5 weeks, or $25 per day.)

SATURDAYS 10AM-3PM FIRST 4 WEEKS/MONTH

A time for students who are registered to come to school to weave with others. A Roving Instructor will be present on Tuesdays and Thursdays to teach, assist and answer weaving questions. Open Studio on other days of the week may not have roving instructors.

Open Studio tuition gives access to roving instructors, office hours, library privileges and volunteer opportunities.

To sign up for Open Studio a person needs to have taken an introductory class or be an experienced or returning weaver.  Introductory classes, described below, include Tapestry Techniques , Beginning Tapestry Semi-Private Instruction Workshops, and/or Tapestry Techniques on a Navajo Style Loom.

INTENSIVE WORKSHOPS- IN PERSON

Cancellation: If a workshop does not meet minimum registration one week before it begins, it will be canceled.  Register early!

BEGINNING TAPESTRY–SEMI-PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

DETAILS: Learn the basics of tapestry weaving in this small group 3-day workshop. Learn how to warp the loom, then weave stripes, geometric shapes like triangles and rectangles, create smooth curves, and add colors. Students should expect to complete at least one sampler; some will start a second. The 12”x18” copper pipe loom and a full-color reference handout are yours to take home. This workshop is intended for beginners and those needing a basic refresher.

COST: $290, includes loom, one warp. Weft purchased at school.

A class occurs during Open Studio, is small, and has a defined length with a curriculum and goals. Students register and pay a class fee that is separate from the Open Studio tuition.  Classes usually meet weekly.

TAPESTRY TECHNIQUES

INSTRUCTOR: TERRY OLSON

DETAILS: Whether you are a beginning or have more advanced skills, this class will teach you the techniques you need to weave a successful tapestry. Beginners will learn how to warp the loom, then weave stripes, geometric shapes like triangles and rectangles, create smooth curves, and add colors. Advanced techniques like pick and pick, circles, weft bundling taught when students are ready. Class size is small and is held during Open Studio on Tuesdays. A 12” x 18” copper pipe loom is available for use and/or purchase ($40). In addition, the tools, weft and warp you will need are available for purchase in the School Shoppe. All levels welcome.

DETAILS: This five-week class is for beginners, as well as those who have some experience but need a refresher or are ready to learn additional tips and techniques. Beginners will learn how to warp a loom, weave stripes, geometric shapes such as triangles and rectangles, create smooth curves and add colors. Advanced techniques such as hatching, weft interlock, pick and pick, and more, will be taught when students are ready. Class size is small and held during Open Studio. Weft and warp available for purchase at school shoppe.

DETAILS: In this class students will weave contemporary designs using Navajo-style techniques and tools. A Navajo-style warp is four-selvedge; a Navajo-style loom is an upright wooden frame loom. Use of tools and a loom are included in the fee and are available for purchase. Warp and weft will be purchase at the school shoppe. Class size is small and is held during Open Studio. Suitable for beginning and advanced weavers.

INTENSIVE WORKSHOPS- IN PERSON

BEGINNING SPINNING

INSTRUCTOR: CHRISTINE THOMAS-FLITCROFT

DETAILS: Beginning Spinning students will learn the basics of spinning yarn using a spinning wheel. Students will create a single and a 2-ply yarn. Workshop includes spinning wheel maintenance, as well as selecting and preparing wool for spinning using different types of equipment. Students can bring their own spinning wheels or borrow one for the workshop.

JANUARY 22 AND 23, 2022

COST: $120, PLUS $10 MATERIALS FEE (paid directly to instructor in workshop)

NAVAJO STYLE SPINDLING

INSTRUCTOR: CHRISTINE THOMAS-FLITCROFT

DETAILS: This workshop will cover Navajo spinning techniques using the Navajo style spindle. We will discuss different types of Navajo spindles, Navajo spinning techniques and wool types traditionally used. We will focus on the Navajo techniques of drafting and spinning wool two and three times. We will also cover the Navajo three-ply techniques on the Navajo spindle. Skill level: Some experience with spindle or wheel spinning is helpful. This class is great for beginner to advanced spinners wishing to learn Navajo style spinning techniques.

ADVANCED DESIGN

INSTRUCTOR: AMY BELGAN

DETAILS: A continuation of Design Fundamentals, this class focuses on creating cartoons and using design knowledge for positive critiques. A basic understanding of the design elements, principles and the creative process is required for this online class. Students also need to have the ability to join with Zoom.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Independent Study is one-on-one instruction, online or in person. A contract details the focus. Instruction days and times will be determined by the student and instructor together.
